The Kilbride House

The brief

A retired couple building their last house on family land, who wanted heating bills that would not move when they stopped working.

The problem

No natural gas at the road. Bringing a line in was quoted at more than the heating system itself, which meant the building envelope had to carry the whole load.

What we did

Built it as a timber frame inside a wrapped, airtight shell — the frame is the structure and the finish, and none of it penetrates the air barrier. Tested at 0.6 air changes an hour. Air-source heat pump, no gas connection at all. The first full winter cost them under $900 to heat.

"Two change orders in fourteen months. Both quoted before the work happened. I've heard the horror stories. That wasn't ours."
