The Bronte Creek House

The brief

A family moving from Mississauga who had bought a waterfront lot and wanted every main room facing the water.

The problem

Between the conservation authority's development limit and the top-of-bank setback, the buildable land was a strip barely twelve metres deep. No conventional plan fits on that.

What we did

Built it long and narrow, parallel to the shore, one room deep for most of its length — so every main room does face the water. They got what they asked for by constraint rather than by choice. Stone piers carry the deck out over the slope so nothing bears on the bank itself. Approval took five months.
